I can give you the steps for an actual install, but since your Ubuntu needs are minimal, a virtual machine may be best for you. Of course, installing a VM writes to the registry, etc. Is this your own computer or work?
Its my laptop. Not sure for vt-x. External hard drive GB free. VMware Player or VMware workstation? You have vt-x. You need to go into bios and make sure it's enabled. Give MB ram to VM you could even get by with Your needs don't require a lot of space — chaskes. Both solutions are easy and would work for your needs. The drive do not see each other at boot and so no need of grub except on external disk and it only loads when that disk is selected for boot. Even if you downloaded it to a local drive, you'd have to move it across afterwards and that would add up to the same time. Really though, who's on USB 1. Well N-E is pretty strict about Torrents and such so I thought I would just say there legal just to be safe. But trust me, I'm not happy about being on an ancient computer either, but no need to buy a new computer, or even parts just to use on vacation And it turns out this computer does have XP SP2.
